Jurisprudence Study Guide

As self-regulated healthcare professionals, it is critical that registered licensed practical nurses in Alberta are thoroughly familiar and practice in compliance with all regulatory requirements relevant to their nursing role. The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) has developed this Jurisprudence Study Guide to assist regulated members gain knowledge and understanding of the relevant legislation, regulations, ethical and practice standards, and requirements of regulated health professionals practicing in Alberta.

This Jurisprudence Study Guide will also assist LPNs to pass the mandatory CLPNA Jurisprudence Examination. Successful completion of the examination is a requirement for registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta.

This self-study course consists of five modules. Each module includes a variety of learning activities designed to meet different learning preferences and styles. You can view the narrated video presentations and simply read the written materials. Your learning will also be enhanced through completion of the module quizzes and interactive learning activities. You are required to be familiar with the contents of key documents referred in the course. Links are provided to these documents throughout the various learning components.

To access a learning activity, simply click on the appropriate link. After you have completed an activity, return to this home page to proceed to the next activity. Although it is recommended that you complete the modules in order, you are free to create and follow your own learning paths.


Course Modules and Exercises

Module 1: Introduction and Overview

1.1 Video presentation – a narrated video presentation about the definition, purpose and importance of jurisprudence to regulated healthcare professionals, as well as an overview of this entire Jurisprudence Study Guide (11 slides).

1.2 Video player tutorial – a one-minute tour of how to navigate and use the video player for presentations.

1.3 Handout notes – copies of slides and narration that you can download and print, or view online (pdf).

1.4 Jurisprudence knowledge pre-tests (25Q | 50Q | 70Q) – a choice of 3 quizzes (with different number of questions) to see how much you already know (or more importantly don’t know) about jurisprudence affecting the LPN profession (pool of 70 questions).


Module 2: Regulation of LPNs – Part I

2.1 Video presentation – a narrated video presentation about self-regulation, function of CLPNA, College bylaws, legislation, and the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice (32 slides).

2.2 Handout notes – copies of slides and narration that you can download and print, or view online (pdf).

2.3 Knowledge checkup – an interactive exercise consisting of flash-card type questions and answers to assess how well you learned the content in this module (10 randomly selected slides from 22).

2.4 Module 2 quizzes (25Q | 50Q | 74Q) – a choice of 3 online, interactive quizzes on the content covered in this module (pool of 74 questions).


Module 3: Regulation of LPNs – Part II

3.1 Video presentation – a narrated video presentation on topics such as registration, continuing competence and the conduct process. (24 slides).

3.2 Handout notes – copies of slides and narration that you can download and print, or view online (pdf).

3.3 Knowledge checkup – an interactive exercise consisting of flash-card type questions and answers to assess how well you learned the content in this module (12 slides).

3.4 Module 3 quizzes (25Q | 45Q | 65Q) – a choice of 3 online, interactive quizzes on the content covered in this module (pool of 65 questions).


Module 4: Scope of Practice

4.1 Video presentation – a narrated video presentation about LPN scope of practice, restricted activities, supervision and delegation (16 slides).

4.2 Handout notes – copies of slides and narration that you can download and print, or view online (pdf).

4.3 Knowledge checkup – an interactive exercise consisting of flash-card type questions and answers to assess how well you learned the content in this module (7 slides). 

4.4 Module 4 quiz – online, interactive quizzes on the content covered in this module (21 questions).  


Module 5: Professional Accountability and Responsibility

5.1 Video presentation – a short narrated video presentation about professional accountability and responsibility as well as other relevant legislation that affects the practice of nursing (11 slides).

5.2 Handout notes – copies of slides and narration that you can download and print, or view online (pdf).

5.3 Knowledge checkup – an interactive exercise consisting of flash-card type questions and answers to assess how well you learned the content in this module (5 slides). 

5.4 Module 5 quiz – online, interactive quizzes on the content covered in this module (25 questions).  

5.5 Jurisprudence Documents App – this app provides a quick and easy access to all the CLPNA-relevant jurisprudence documents. You can bookmark it, or download it to your mobile device for easy look-up when you need it.


Technology Notes

The pre-test and online quizzes can be completed on regular browsers, tablets and smart phones. For iPhones and iPads, download and install the FREE iSpring viewer from the iTunes Store. For Android devices, iSpring Play is available here. With the iSpring player, the quizzes can be downloaded and saved on your mobile device for off-line practice.

The videos and checkup activities can be completed on regular browsers, iPads/iPhones and Android tablets.
